Hormone Heaven/ Hormone Hell

Posted May 31, 2007, by drLove

Okay, I've been treating women for hormonal imbalances and menopausal/peri-menopausal complaints for the past 15 years.  Now it was time for "doctor heal thyself".

I took my own salivary hormone test 5 years ago and I was low in progesterone (a common finding in our estrogen dominant culture).  I elected not to take a natural bio-identical progesterone cream as therapy at that time because I wanted to help my body even more naturally.

Dealing with stress in a stressed out manner increases the utilization of progesterone dramatically, among other things, which creates a progesterone deficiency.  I thought I would just work on managing stress.  I wanted to use exercise and lifestyle and learn how to handle stress more efficiently before I took a natural "drug".

These last 4 months for me have been a roller coaster ride.  Nothing stressful in my life per se, but just constant mood changes.  Depression, irritability, anxiety, then elation and peace.  Up and down and up and down.  No, I'm not manic depressive if you're wondering.  Crying at the drop of a hat, feeling ticked over things that would normally not even register a tiny blip on my tolerance scale are experiences that made me take note in a big way.  I had no other peri-menopausal symptoms.

I broke open the progesterone cream and started applying it every night.

Within a week, I felt relief.  Almost normal again.  I'm looking forward to how I will be feeling in a few months.  My progesterone tank was near empty and I'm starting to refill it.

I always believed it to be possible to maintain great health with only exercise, rest, good nutrition, regular detoxification, sunlight, fresh air, plentiful pure clean water and happiness.  I guess I needed a little extra support.

I also believe in the experience of a wonderful quality of life for each person, no matter how that it is achieved.  Quality of life both short-term and long-term.

Natural progesterone has helped me transform hormone hell to hormone heaven.

Each individual is unique, so natural hormones don't come in a one size fits all recommendation.  Some women require a combination of different types of hormones and some require different dosages.

to kathleen: Great question kathleen. Could you please copy and paste it into the question area of the site(click on question tab and post new question). This way I can write out a longer answer, as well as link to other sites that are helpful in my explanation. Thanks.

Realizing every woman's body responds differently to hot flash treatments, besides the usual suspects (Black cohosh, dong quai, isoflavones, etc.), what herb or supplements have you heard of for successfully reducing/eliminating persistent hot flashes (once hour/every hour), in an otherwise healthy patient (exercise regularly, vegetarian, drink 70 oz water/day, etc.) Thanks, Kathleen PS I would consider bioidentical hormones only as a last resort, because they carry risks, as do synthetic hormones, and side effects (eg, break through bleeding, which I finally seem to have behind me and don't want to risk adding one more symptom to the mix.)

Your Testimony makes me think of a "pyramid" of natural health. At the bottom are "exercise, rest, good nutrition, regular detoxification, ..." (ie. your list above). Then above that (and narrower) is natural therapies like bio-identical supplements (e.g. your natural progesterone), ozone, chelation, etc. Then above that and much narrower is non-bio-identical pharmaceuticals. Finally, at the tiny top is surgery.
