Hiking is Next to Godliness

Posted March 5, 2007, by drLove

Every Friday I hike with a group of women that range between the ages of 46 - 70 years old.  In spite of many differently held beliefs, opinions and personalities, the experience of hiking with all of them is always a harmonious and connecting one.  I believe this happens because every woman there, for that period of time on Friday, experiences a connection between her own spirit and nature.  This is what I believe creates harmony among the entire group of women.

I would recommend that you use hiking poles when you are doing this, because in the long-term, it helps prevent enormous strain on your hips and knees (i.e. potential osteoarthritis).

I love XCR Gortex material for waterproof breathability.  And I love my down jacket that I can pack up into a tight little ball to have on hand if the weather turns cold, or if I cool down while stopping for lunch.  I also love my layered clothing that is made from Merino wool.  Even when I sweat buckets and it's cold out, my sweat dries quickly and I don't freeze.  In my opinion, the best Merino clothing I have found is www.icebreaker.com . And I wouldn't be without my mini Thermorest pad that I blow up to put under my butt when I sit down for lunch (when it's raining or snowing out, it's a Godsend).

Happy hiking!!!!

Another great thing is you can wear Merino wool for days, and they don't stink even when you do lots of exercise and sweat. Sure saves on the washing bills, not to mention it saves losing close friends.

Dear Dr. Love: You are right on the mark with the Merino wool. As I have purchased a long-john set and it is the best underwear material I have ever had. Best money I have ever spent. I can spend hours in the garden because of it - that alone spells happiness!

So Pete, when and where is our next backpacking trip going to be?
