I Love the Sun

Posted March 5, 2007, by drLove

The most efficient and inexpensive way to obtain Vitamin D is from the sun. Vitamin D deficiency (especially in northern latitudes where sun exposure is much less), is related to the development of many cancers including breast, ovarian, prostate and colon.

Taking in at least 1 hour of sunlight everyday (with no sun screen) is plenty to get your vitamin D. We have become a sun phobic culture because of mass advertising for sun screens and skin cancer. Sun overexposure is not beneficial, but getting in the sun daily is great for your mental and physical health.

In my medical practice (I live in northern Canada), I have yet to see a normal 25-hyrdroxy vitamin D blood level (including my own).

I love the sun.  I never use sunscreen.  I feel energized, alive and need very little food when I spend time in the sun.  My skin is very healthy and for 47, I don't have many wrinkles.  Of course, I have dark hair and olive skin, so my tolerance for the sun is quite high.  But even if you are fair, getting out in the sun for at least 1/2 an hour daily will give you at least 10,000 IU of vitamin D.  That's the best bang for your buck that I know of.
