How-to: Learning to snowboard

Posted February 21, 2007, by drLove

Do you want to stretch your learning curve to the limit? Challenge yourself to new heights? Then learn how to snowboard.

Ingredients:

  • a snowboard with bindings (use a rental unit unless you're sure you're going to love the sport, - in that case, purchase one instead)
  • a helmet (rental or purchased);  this is a MUST, so don't be crazy and not wear one!!
  • a clear head, with focused attention
  • a ski hill
  • a lift ticket (for beginners, the ski hill will usually have package deals that include a lesson, rentals and a lift ticket)
  • warm clothing; layering is good, as well as having waterproof breathable pants
  • snow goggles
  • for beginners, a day of good visibility with soft snow for your landings is ideal

Steps:

  1. Drive up to the hill.
  2. Sign up for a lesson and get fitted for your rentals.
  3. Listen to the instructor and have fun!!!!
  4. Remember, the first 50 falls on your butt are the hardest.  It's all downhill after that!!!
  5. Practice, practice, practice.
  6. There is a steep learning curve to doing this sport, but once you've got it, you've got it baby!!  Wuhoooo!!!!
  7. Get a taste of floating on powder.  You'll wonder why you didn't learn how to do this 20 years ago.

This Recipe shows that no matter the environment, there is at some practice that is resonant with that environment, and enjoyable. The trick is to find that practice and master it. Where we live, Spring is so far along the blossoms have all blown off the apple, pear, plum, and almond trees, and fruit is starting to grow. Kind of hard not to enjoy this place. But if we lived where you are, I'd hope my knees could stand snowboarding.

My family and I just came down from the mountain this evening. It is April 13th and the hill is closing for the season in just 2 days. We were boarding in fresh powder!!!! It just goes to show you that you can turn something you despise (long, cold winters), into something glorious and wonderful, - something you are actually looking forward to in another 6 months!!

There is nothing like being with people you love, while breathing in fresh beautiful mountain air and carving out knee-high champagne powder on the slopes. That's as close to heaven as it gets.

You almost make me feel bad about living in a place where its 80 degrees more than a week before the Spring solstice. :) That snowboarding sure sounds fun.

At 47 years of age, learning how to do this and gliding through powder - I felt like a kid again. Full of curiosity and openness and adventure and the thrill and fun of being alive. When you float and glide on soft snow, it is really a blissful experience. The learning is a bit more painful, but worth it in the end. Aren't lots of things like that in life? Painful learning, but man oh man, extremely worth it. Everyone learns at their own speed. It took me about 100 times down the mountain before I finally got the feel of my edges. It took my husband just once down the mountain. It's all good.
