How-to: DHA during pregnancy

Posted February 21, 2007, by drLove

Giving your baby's brain development the best chance for health is accomplished by pregnant mom taking an essential fatty acid called DHA (decahexanoic acid).

Ingredients:

  • high quality fish oil
  • a smoothie (made of fruit, juice, protein powder) if you don't like taking fish oil directly in your mouth

Steps:

  1. Make sure the fish oil you purchase is molecularly distilled for heavy metals.
  2. The best brands of fish oil come from the following companies: Carlson, Genestra, Nordic Naturals and Douglas Laboratories.
  3. Take at least 900 mg of DHA daily.
  4. Take your fish oil in a smoothie or with a meal.
  5. Refrigerate oil.

i have given my toddle fish oil from the time he was about 8 months. i really think this is an excellent way to support brain function and provide a natura source of vitamin D. however, i don't agree with the above comment about using juice, unless it is freshly squeezed. research has found that processed sugar, including processed juices, depress the immune system. juice begin losing their vitamin content, the moment they are made. plus virtually all packaged juices are heat processed further reducing their vitamin content. many are rendered into a fruit syrup and reconstituted with water. as far as i'm concerned, there is no place for sugar in my toddlers diet!
