How-to: Mountain hiking with friends

Posted February 26, 2007, by drLove

Do you want to feel completely exhilarated, alive and in love with life? Try hiking in the mountains with friends.

Ingredients:

  • yourself and a group of people
  • hiking boots, backpack, water, healthy lunch and snacks, bear spray (if you live in regions where you may use it), first aid kit, matches, hiking poles
  • layered clothing that you can gradually put on or take off if you get too cold or too warm (I love Merino wool (it’s the best for keeping you dry when you sweat)
  • extra clothing and rain gear in your backpack
  • beautiful scenery; mountains have the freshest air!!
  • Steps:

    1. Arrange a time/schedule every week to do this with a group of people who are interested.
    2. Purchase or borrow the necessary gear.
    3. Carpool to the trail head, strap on your packs, start walking, have enlightening conversations or just walk in peaceful silence.
    4. Rest when you need to, don't get lost, and come back to the trail head.

I also agree with amelia. But although I love all of nature, I find that hiking in the mountains is more likely to bring out that exhilarated, soaring feeling in me. Maybe I just come from a long line of mountain people (versus cave, or beach, or river, or desert people). :)

Absolutely amelia. I'm just partial to mountain hiking, but you're so right. Give me ocean, desert, caves, parks. I'll take 'em all!!! Hiking in all of these areas makes it easier to help us connect with our own beautiful nature.

it doesn't have to be mountains. just being out in nature is awesome. a walk along a river. a kayak in the ocean. exploring caves. a hike in the desert. even a walk under a big old maple tree in a local urban park. (although I confess a passion for wilderness)!

Agreed! Just bliss. I like going out my myself too in our local mountains. No bears or big cats to worry about. I think I'll put in solo hiking as a recipe.
