How-to: Remembering to Drink Your Water

Posted March 26, 2007, by drLove

Most everyone knows how important it is to drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water daily to maintain or achieve great health. The most common excuse is: "I forget to". Here's how you can remember.

Ingredients:

  • stainless steel water bottle (see www.kleankanteen.com
  • pure clean filtered water
  • a titch of discipline

Steps:

  1. Purchase a stainless steel water bottle so you can avoid the cancer-causing chemicals found in plastics.
  2. If you get a 40 oz. container, you'll drink 2 containers daily.  If you get a 27 oz. container, you'll drink 2 1/2 containers daily.  If you get an 18 oz. container, you'll drink 4 daily.
  3. Each night before you go to bed when you are doing your nightly routine (brushing teeth, etc.), get into the habit of putting a full water bottle next to your bed side.
  4. As soon as you wake up, before even going to the bathroom, get into the habit of drinking water first thing in the morning.
  5. Carry your water bottle with you.  Take it to work, put it in your briefcase, put it on a waist belt, leave it on your desk, take it in the car - whatever works for you.
  6. Gage a regular time in which to complete your water consumption.  Example:  "By lunch time, I want to have consumed one entire 40 oz. container of water, and by supper time I want to have consumed the other container.  (Many people do not like to drink fluids after supper as this can create sleep disturbance due to urination).
  7. Each time you sit down for a meal, get into the habit of asking yourself:  "how am I doing with my water quota for today?"  Some days you'll be playing catch up, other days you'll be on target.
  8. Water is a gift that nourishes life.  When you drink water, see it as a gift you are giving yourself.

Absolutely agree. Personally, I use a 40oz military surplus anodized steel canteen for this purpose. It's endlessly fascinating to my toddler, as well as one of the biggest components of my own health. Only problem is being forgetful of where I left the canteen.
