How-to: Prioritizing Your Life

Posted March 29, 2007, by drLove

Do you want balance in your life? Put your attention on what is important to you and take actions to match your attention.

Ingredients:

  • you
  • all of the priorities in your life
  • your top 5 life priorities

Steps:

  1. Get really clear about what the top 5 priorities in your life are.  Write them down if this helps solidify your committment and intention toward these priorites.
  2. In any given moment that you are feeling stressed, ask yourself:  "What is the priority for me right now?"  It may match one of your 5 general life priorities and it may not.
  3. If it matches one of your 5 general life priorites, take action to improve the situation.
  4. If it does not match one of your 5 general life priorities, get clear with yourself regarding how much time you want to spend on something that doesn't make your top 5.
  5. Try to allot balanced time and energy to all of the 5 top priorities in your life. You will be healthier for it.
  6. If being healthy isn't in your top 5, perhaps you want to rethink your priorities.  If you don't have your health, life can be extremely challenging and not too fun.
  7. If feeling happy or feeling love isn't in your top 5, perhaps you want to rethink your priorities.  If you don't feel happy or loving, life can be extremely challenging and not too fun.

Recreation is a huge life balancer for me. Hiking, snowboarding, basketball, camping,- whatever. Without regular recreation, I do not hum as smoothly in my life.
