Throw Out the Popcorn

Posted March 9, 2007, by drLove

Popcorn is not a healthy snack for many reasons.  Let's first start with corn being one of the most polluted grains for GMO contamination.  Most corn products (be it corn chips, popcorn, cornstarch, corn meal, corn tortillas, etc.) are genetically engineered Franken Foods that do not uplift health.

Many people have a food sensitivity to corn.  I don't see corn come up very often as a true food allergy (as tested by ELISA blood test), but many people do not tolerate it because for them, it is very difficult to digest.

Even if you purchased organic corn kernels (non-GMO) and popped them yourself in a air popper, this still is not a healthy snack.  The carbohydrate content is too high, and in this North American culture with obesity and insulin resistance on the rise, it is not a wise idea.

However, for those of us who are slim, it still is not a good choice.

I rarely eat popcorn.  Once or twice a year, maybe.  After what happened yesterday, I threw out my bag of organic popping kernels for good.

The day before, I was too lazy to make my impecable healthy lunch (usually organic salad, including sunflower seeds, raisins, broccoli, lettuce, carrots, celery and organic turkey, with extra virgin olive oil, lemon and garlic for the dressing).  So I did what I almost never do.  I made a whole bowl of popcorn and ate it for lunch.

The next morning I felt like I was in a full blown appendicitis attack.  I was doubled over, I had excruciating right lower quadrant pain, and I could barely walk.  My husband wanted to take me to the hospital, but I knew that if I could quickly clear out the bowel in my right lower quadrant, I'd be okay.  The hospital was my second option if my self-prescribed therapy didn't work.

So I gave myself a 2 litre plain water enema, and also started taking the oral homeopathic remedy R1 (from Dr. Reckweg) to decrease any inflammation that could be starting.

It was very apparent that the poorly digested popcorn kernels had irritated my bowel.  Likely, an undigested particle obstructed the opening to the ileocecal valve or the entry into the appendix.

I experienced relief immediately after my treatment regime of homeopathy and enema administration.

Next time, I'll just go for the organic corn chips with homemade guacamole dip or organic veggies with hummus.
