The wedding planners miracle!

Posted June 17, 2009, by kim

It all started one Saturday when my patients friend let me in on a little secret. He planned to marry his special gal (our patient) in a few weeks. You see even though she was dying from a terminal illness it was their wish to be married and celebrate their love along with the love they shared for my patients 11 yr. old daughter. Our team had come to know and appreciate these three people during the course of her stay with us.

Since I always love a love story I was instantly swept into the whirlwind of romance. I thought of my patient and what this would mean for her. How beautiful , lovely and deeply moving this would be for her and the two people dearest to her. I could forsee one critical issue which I shared with her friend, that being the timing of the event. In my estimation waiting a few weeks would be waiting too long. He understood and later that day came to me to let me know that they would be married that coming Tuesday. He had someone lined up to perform the marriage but that was all. Wow I thought that's only three days away. He then asked if I thought one of the nurses could help the patient with her hair and some make-up.Of course we would no problem there.

I started to process this news along with my co-workers. I called the Shopper's drugmart and asked about their LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER program and was able to set someone up for that Tuesday. I asked if they could also spend a little time with our patients daughter to make her feel extra special for this day. The makeup and hairdos were looked after. The next day a new group of staff were on and caught the vision as well. They called a photographer in town so the event would be captured in life long memories. He agreed. Zehrs supermarket willingly donated a cake. The paper factory donated decorations for her room. The famous Reid's candy donated chocolates. What about an overnight stay at the grand and glorious Langdon Hall. They gladly accomodated with the best room in the house. Well what about a limousine to get them there. No problem there either. Flowers from the local flower shop for the bride and for her room were willingly supplied.Every business that was called agreed without question and gladly participated with only a couple of days notice. The snowball effect of the generousity was truly contagious and the excitment within the team of caregivers amazing. The staff lined up as they made their way to the limousine and blew bubbles as we sent them off with our love. They were married and spent a lovely night together. A pathway of rose petals to her bed greeted them when they returned to the hospital room.

Her condition deteriorated quickly after that day. The remnants of the love of all of those who contributed the the amazing event continues to live on.
