The Notion of "Expert"

Posted April 9, 2007, by drLove

Long ago during childhood, when we were growing up and were open to new ideas and learning about the world around us at an astromically rapid rate, we had influences around us that taught us what an expert was suppose to be.

These influences were our parents, teachers, friends, and society at large.

For some, the message that was taught was that you are not an expert on you.  "Other people know you better than you know yourself.  Other people know what is best for you.  You must heed the advice and the opinions of others because they are the experts on you".

For others (who were more fortunate IMO), the message was quite different.  "You are the expert on you.  You know what is best for you.  You can choose to take or reject the advice and opinions of others because you are the expert on you".

The first group of people I've mentioned, appear to have lost touch with their intuition.  Their openness to new ideas has been suppressed from years and years of a lack of self-trust and a lack of trust in the idea that they are their own best expert.

The latter group of people I find, have their intutive powers intact.

I find that most people fit into both groups - those that have been taught that other people are the experts for them, as well as those that have been taught that they are their own experts.

For sure, there are experts in medicine, in law, in car mechanics, in computer technology - you name it.  There are experts in all fields.  (And often, experts in the same field disagree with each other and present opposing viewpoints). I'm not suggesting not seek out the advice of these experts.  What I am suggesting, is that whether it's a doctor or a car mechanic telling us what it is that we should do, at the end of the day, we are the experts on what we believe will work best for us after gathering information from others.

Last Worker is the opportunity to regain or maintain (depending on which group of people you fit into), the openness and receptivity of youth.  It is the opportunity to experience the idea that you are your own best expert on you.  You can share what it is that you have learned in life, what has worked fabulously for you, and in doing so, not only will you undoubtedly help others, you will also solidify your expression of self-knowledge.

As well, since you are the expert on you, you can easily accept or reject the advice/suggestions/thoughts/beliefs/ideas on this site.  As well, you can add comments to those particular ideas and thoughts that you do not agree with and by doing so, your expression of self-knowledge becomes stronger.

There will be no person on this site that has a PhD in "love" or "wisdom" or "intaking" or "endings" or any of the listed categories on this site for that matter.  We all however, have PhDs in having a human experience.

Well said. I share this view. Reverence of the more powerful seems almost hard-wired into humans. As science emerged as dominant in the last century, the powerful were those who controlled the impenetrable language of science. So we worship the scientists and leave the thinking to them. At Last Worker, we say "no thanks" to that.
